Quilled Logos

Justin wanted to do something nice for a fellow machinist and asked if I thought I could recreate their logo.

A while ago, I made a quilled version of the Toolpath logo for Justin.

So, I was happy to give this a try for him. I hadn't quilled people before, though, so I knew it would be a challenge.

I opted to print the design and work directly on it. For the face, arms, and legs, I used paper cutouts adhered on top of quilled pieces.

I added strips of paper along the edges of the legs and arms to hide the coils inside.

For the torpedo, I again worked directly on the printed image. I started with the mouth, as I expected that to be the most challenging part.

Once finished, I adhered the figure to the torpedo, so it looked like she was sitting on top.

Justin 3D printed a background for it with the text of the logo.

And I'm pleased to say it was well received!

When Justin asked me to try another one, I figured I'd give it a go.

The logo for Confounded Machine looks pretty simple, but the super straight lines made it difficult.

The first part of the outline went pretty smoothly, but as I added other layers, it began to warp. I had to continually stop to reshape the outline.

To fill the inside, I used a shiny purple paper with iridescent gilding to resemble the space-like background of the logo.

The inside layer is a smaller width than the outline, so it adds very subtle color, and Justin says it gives it a design similar to the effect the CNC machine creates.
